Every Beginning’s End

Every Beginnings End poem by Britt Wolfe author

We step into the new,
and something older loosens its grip—
a quiet unravelling of what once was.

The child’s small hand slips from ours
as we turn toward the wider road.
Laughter that once filled a certain room
settles into the grain of the floorboards,
never to rise quite the same.

Every dawn carries this with it—
not grief exactly,
but its softer echo.

We wake with yesterday still on the tongue,
sweet and thinning,
already beyond reach.

The first kiss of something new
holds the last of what came before—
not in mourning,
but in passing.

We grow out of ourselves in increments
too small to name:
a sweater that no longer fits the shape we’ve taken,
a street that forgets our footsteps,
a version of us that believed in simpler maps
receding without ceremony.

Each step forward leaves something behind—
a faint impression
already loosening in the earth.

And still we walk.

Because the heart, in its quiet knowing,
cannot keep everything.

It lets go
without asking permission.

Not as loss alone,
but as a kind of making room—
space enough for something unplanned
to take root.

There is no beginning without this—
no turning toward light
without something dimming behind it.

We carry both,
not as burden,
but as truth:

what is opening,
and what has already closed.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
