Destroy It

Destroy It: a poem by Britt Wolfe author

Creation
is slow.

Brick by brick.

Word by word.

Root by root.

It asks for patience,
for failure,
for beginning again
with blistered hands
and stubborn hope.

Destruction
asks for almost nothing.

A careless match.

A sharpened tongue.

A single moment
of delighted ruin.

The tallest tree
can be measured
against an axe.

The brightest light
can be judged
by a room
determined to stay dark.

A masterpiece
can be reduced
to flaws
if enough attention
is paid
to the cracks.

Every summit
looks smaller
when viewed
through a telescope
pointed downward.

Every victory
appears undeserved
when enough doubt
is painted over it.

And for a while,

the ashes
feel like triumph.

The broken pieces
look like proof.

The silence
resembles victory.

Until the smoke clears.

The mountain
still exists.

The light
still belongs
to the sun.

The masterpiece,
whether broken
or untouched,

was never the reason
the canvas
remained empty.

Because nothing built
has ever been created

by destroying
something else.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
