History Loves To Hate Her

History Loves To Hate Her: a poem by Britt Wolfe author

History has always possessed
a remarkable instinct
for finding the wrong villain.

Long before evidence,
before reflection,
before uncomfortable truths
have time to gather their courage,

judgment has already chosen
a familiar face.

The crowd rarely hesitates.

It asks little
beyond a convenient story,
and stories have always been easiest
to tell at the expense
of the least powerful voice.

Reputations are built
with astonishing care,
yet dismantled
with effortless enthusiasm.

A headline.

A rumour.

A photograph stripped of context.

A mistake made
under impossible circumstances.

Soon enough,
laughter becomes certainty,
certainty becomes memory,
and memory quietly disguises itself
as fact.

Years pass.

The truth, patient as ever,
finally arrives.

Hidden messages surface.

Witnesses speak.

Documents emerge.

The silence surrounding power
begins, at last,
to fracture.

The world pauses,
looks backward,
and wonders
how so many failed to see
what had been there all along.

Apologies are offered
with remarkable tenderness,

but only after
the damage
has become permanent.

History has never struggled
to forgive
the celebrated.

It has only ever struggled
to believe
the inconvenient.

Perhaps that is why
so many names
must first survive
public contempt
before earning
private compassion.

And perhaps
the saddest lesson
history continues to teach

is not how often
truth is hidden,

but how eagerly

a woman

is chosen

to hide it beneath.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
