An Appeal For Justice

An Appeal For Justice poem by Britt Wolfe author

There is a grief
that begins long before loss,
in the quiet devastation
of a truth
left standing alone.

And sometimes,
what sounds like anger
is only sorrow
that has exhausted
every gentler language.

There are words
that leave the mouth as weapons
but were born as prayers,
each sharpened edge
an unanswered plea
to be seen,
to be heard,
to be believed.

How cruel,
that the longing to be understood
can make a stranger
of the voice that asks.

And how terribly human,
to mistake the breaking
for the thing that broke,
to condemn the thunder
and never question
what the sky endured.

Not every wound
is an accusation.
Not every cry
is a declaration of war.

Sometimes,
the loudest words
are simply love,
still standing
before a closed door,
asking for justice
when all it ever wanted
was tenderness.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
