Schrödinger's Future

Schrödinger's Future by Britt Wolfe Author

Tomorrow has not happened.

It waits,
sealed inside a box
no hand can open early.

Within it,
every life still breathes.

There is a child
who grows old beside the one they love.

There is another
who leaves everything familiar
to begin again.

There is a painter
whose empty canvas
changes the world.

A teacher.
A parent.
A stranger remembered
for a single act of impossible kindness.

A dream abandoned.

A dream fulfilled.

A road taken.

A road forever left behind.

Each possibility
exists in perfect silence,
not because fate has chosen it,
but because fate
has not.

Like Schrödinger's cat,
the future refuses
to become only one thing
until the moment arrives
and certainty
finally looks inside.

Until then,

every apology
has been forgiven.

Every goodbye
has become a reunion.

Every heartbreak
has healed.

Every impossible hope
has already come true.

And every fear
has quietly faded
into the life
that never happened.

Perhaps that is
the strange mercy
of an unopened tomorrow.

Before the universe
collapses its infinite answers
into a single history,

every ending is still unwritten.

Every beginning
is still waiting.

And for one brief,
extraordinary moment,

every possible version
of a life

is alive.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
