Justice Isn't for This Plane of Existence

Justice: A poem by Britt Wolfe author

Justice
is perhaps

the most beautiful promise

this world
never made.

The seasons
do not distribute themselves
according to virtue.

Rain falls
without consultation.

The harvest
belongs as often
to cruelty
as kindness.

History remembers
the victorious
more faithfully
than the righteous.

The innocent
learn suffering.

The dishonest
inherit comfort.

The generous
leave empty-handed.

The selfish
often leave applauded.

No invisible hand
interrupts
every injustice.

No voice
calls time
the moment
the scales begin to tip.

Instead,

life moves forward

with unsettling indifference,

allowing triumph
to visit
the undeserving,

and grief
to find
those already carrying
too much.

Perhaps

that is why
justice has always felt

less like a destination,

and more like
a longing.

Something carried
deep within,

because the heart
instinctively recognises

that things
are not
as they ought to be.

Every unanswered prayer.

Every stolen future.

Every needless cruelty.

Every truth
buried beneath applause.

Each one
whispers
the same quiet confession—

this cannot
be
the final accounting.

Perhaps

justice was never absent.

Perhaps

it simply belongs

to a horizon

still beyond sight.

To another dawn.

Another breath.

Another plane
of existence,

where every weight
is finally balanced,

every hidden wound
is seen,

and every wrong

at last,

finds its equal.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
