Life
pretends to be
a collection of beginnings.

The first breath.

The first word.

The first step.

The first kiss.

But beneath
every celebration

waits
another ending.

The moment
a second becomes memory,

it is gone.

The hour
cannot be held.

The season
cannot be persuaded
to stay.

A page turned

is the death
of the page before it.

Every road travelled

is another road
left forever behind.

The favourite song

always reaches
its final note.

The laughter

falls silent.

The embrace

loosens.

The candle,

however carefully guarded,

slowly teaches itself
to disappear.

Even triumph
arrives dressed
as an ending.

The mountain climbed

is no longer
waiting to be climbed.

The dream fulfilled

ceases
to be a dream.

Nothing beautiful
escapes
its own conclusion.

Not youth.

Not summer.

Not innocence.

Not love.

Perhaps

that is why
the heart grows heavier
with every passing year.

Not because life
becomes less beautiful,

but because beauty
leaves behind
so many ghosts.

Rooms
once filled with voices.

Gardens
remembering spring.

Photographs
holding smiles

that time
can no longer repeat.

Every life

is a trail

of endings.

Yet—

what astonishing fortune

to have lived
through enough beauty

that its absence
can still bring tears.

To carry
so many endings

simply means

there were
that many things

worth never wanting
to end.
