The Questions That Remain

Afterward,
the questions arrive.

Not all at once.

The way rain arrives—
one drop at a time,
until everything is soaked.

What if the drive home had been quicker?

What if the phone had rung ten minutes earlier?

What if the right words had been waiting
at exactly the right moment?

The mind becomes a locksmith
searching for a key
to a door already closed.

Hours are dismantled.

Conversations replayed.

Ordinary Tuesdays held to the light
like ancient manuscripts
hiding some overlooked truth.

A different goodbye.

A different silence.

A different turn of the road.

Surely somewhere,
buried among the small details,
waits the missing piece.

The moment that could have altered everything.

So the searching begins.

Again.

And again.

And again.

A lifetime spent wandering
through hallways of possibility.

Opening doors that lead nowhere.

Building alternate endings
from scraps of memory.

What if the coffee had lasted longer?

What if the invitation had been accepted?

What if one more question had been asked?

One more hug.

One more minute.

One more chance.

The heart bargains endlessly
with a past that no longer negotiates.

Because love cannot bear helplessness.

Love would rather accept blame
than accept uncertainty.

Would rather carry a stone forever
than admit some storms arrive
beyond the reach of any shelter.

And so the questions remain.

Not because answers exist.

But because love does.

Love continues searching
long after searching can no longer change the outcome.

Long after the roads have ended.

Long after the clocks have moved on.

Still turning over every memory.

Still looking for the impossible doorway.

Still whispering into the silence:

What if?

What if?

What if?

And perhaps that is the final heartbreak.

Not the absence of answers.

But the presence of love
with nowhere left to go.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
