The Blast Radius

The Blast Radius poem by Britt Wolfe author

History likes clean narratives.

A victim.

A villain.

A crime scene outlined in yellow tape
and a verdict delivered before the credits roll.

But life is rarely so considerate.

Violence does not stop
where the body falls.

It keeps travelling.

Through courtrooms.

Through dining rooms.

Through family trees.

Through decades.

A stone dropped into water
does not choose
where the ripples end.

A gunshot fired in anger
does not ask permission
before echoing through generations.

A murder may belong
to a single hand.

The consequences rarely do.

There are those
who wake every morning
serving sentences
for crimes they did not commit.

Not behind bars.

Behind circumstances.

Behind names.

Behind histories
that arrived before they did.

Entire lives shaped
by decisions made in rooms
they never entered.

Punished by absence.

Punished by shame.

Punished by silence.

Punished by loyalties
they did not swear.

The world speaks often
of guilt.

Less often
of proximity.

Of standing close enough
to a detonation
that the shrapnel still finds its mark.

What strange mathematics.

One act.

A hundred casualties.

Some buried immediately.

Others slowly.

Years later.

A life redirected.

A door closed.

A future altered.

A burden inherited.

All because somewhere,
long ago,
someone chose violence
and the universe kept the receipt.

The perpetrator may be gone.

The victim may be mourned.

The headlines may yellow.

The case may close.

But consequences are patient things.

They survive the people
who created them.

They move quietly
through bloodlines,
institutions,
friendships,
communities.

A ghost
with no interest
in staying buried.

And perhaps the cruelest part
is that innocence
has never been immunity.

The blast radius
does not care
who lit the fuse.

Only who happened
to be standing nearby.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
