Chemistry

Chemistry: A poem by Britt Wolfe author

Not every element
finds another
worth becoming.

Some remain
perfectly complete
in isolation,

refusing every invitation
to bind.

No fault
can be found
in oxygen

for never becoming gold.

No blame
belongs to rain

for falling
where no roots
wait beneath.

The world
has never promised

that every meeting

would become
a connection.

Some conversations
remain careful.

Some laughter
never arrives.

Some silences
grow so familiar

that eventually

they become
another language.

How quietly
hope begins to bargain.

Perhaps tomorrow.

Perhaps next year.

Perhaps one more holiday,

one more birthday,

one more attempt

to discover

the missing spark.

Until absence
no longer feels temporary,

but ordinary.

The table
is still shared.

The milestones
still arrive.

The photographs
still collect.

Everything expected
takes place,

except
the inexplicable miracle

of belonging.

There are no arguments
large enough
to explain it.

No betrayal.

No catastrophe.

Only the unbearable weight

of something beautiful

that never happened.

Some distances

cannot be measured

in kilometres,

or years,

or words left unsaid.

Some exist

between two hearts

waiting

for a chemistry

that never came.

And perhaps

there is no sadder place

for silence to live

than between

a parent

and a child.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
