Elbows On The Table

Elbows On The Table poem by Britt Wolfe author

The first rule was simple.

No elbows on the table.

Not while eating.
Not while company was present.
Not while growing into the sort of person
the world might approve of.

So elbows stayed tucked.

Back straight.

Napkin folded.

Voice measured.

Opinions softened around the edges.

There were many rules like that.

Some spoken.

Some understood.

Some inherited so completely
they felt like gravity.

Take up less space.

Do not be difficult.

Do not be loud.

Do not disappoint.

Smile.

Apologise.

Adjust.

Repeat.

And so the years passed.

A life lived with careful posture.

A life spent folding corners inward.

Then one evening,
without announcement or ceremony,

an elbow landed on the table.

Nothing happened.

No lightning struck.

No ancestors rose from the grave
to register formal objections.

The ceiling remained attached to the house.

The earth continued its slow revolution.

Dinner tasted exactly the same.

Strange.

One small act of disobedience.

One tiny crack in the architecture.

And suddenly questions appeared.

What other rules were made of paper?

What other fences stood only because nobody tested them?

What else had been mistaken for truth
simply because it arrived early?

The second elbow followed.

More comfortably this time.

Then came other rebellions.

A boundary where silence once lived.

A dream pursued without permission.

A voice no longer edited
for the convenience of strangers.

A life rearranged
according to desire rather than expectation.

Funny how freedom works.

Rarely through revolution.

More often through accumulation.

One small refusal.

Then another.

Then another still.

Until the person who once sat rigidly upright
cannot quite remember
why so much energy was spent
trying to become acceptable.

These days, elbows rest comfortably on the table.

Sometimes both.

Sometimes while laughing too loudly.

Sometimes while discussing ideas
once considered inappropriate.

Sometimes while planning futures
that would have horrified earlier versions.

The food tastes better now.

Not because the recipe changed.

Because the life surrounding it did.

And somewhere among the scattered crumbs
and abandoned rules,

sits the quiet realization:

the elbows were never the problem.

The table was simply the first place
freedom asked to be noticed.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
