They found each other without spectacle—
not in the sharp turn of a moment,
but in the slow accumulation of days
that kept choosing the same direction.

Nothing announced it.
No language rose up to name it.

Just this:

his mug already warming beside hers
before she reached for it,
the light left on in the hallway
because he knew she hated the dark,
the way she paused in the doorway
when his shoulders held too much of the day
and said nothing at all,
only crossed the room
and stood close enough
for it to matter.

They learned each other
in the small hours.

In how he folded shirts—
careful, precise,
as if order could keep something from coming undone.
In how she read the same page twice
when her mind wandered somewhere she didn’t want to follow.

There was no keeping score.
Not because they decided against it—
but because it never occurred to them to begin.

Somewhere between burnt toast
and the second telling of the same story,
between grocery lists and quiet drives home,
the space between them stopped asking to be filled
and started holding them both.

It wasn’t perfect.

He forgot things that mattered to her.
She carried worries he couldn’t always see.
They said the wrong thing
at the wrong time
more often than either would admit.

And still—

he reached for her in his sleep
like something the body remembers
before the mind can interfere.

She laughed at the same small absurdities
year after year
as if joy had learned the shape of repetition
and decided it was enough.

Nothing about it looked extraordinary
from the outside.

Two people
moving through the same rooms,
touching the same objects,
returning to each other
at the end of each day.

But inside it—

there was a steadiness
that did not need to prove itself,
a quiet, unspoken agreement
to stay
even when staying was ordinary,
especially when it was.

And somewhere along the way,
without either of them noticing the exact moment,

it became home.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
