The Luck Of Being Alive

The universe is not obligated
to give anything a voice.

It builds stars
only to burn them out.
It carves mountains
only to grind them down.
It spins planets
that will one day go cold
without ceremony.

Everything is temporary.
Everything is built
with an ending folded inside it.

And yet—

Here we are.

Breathing.
Aware.
Able to decide.

Do you understand
how improbable that is?

That in a cosmos indifferent to outcome,
we were given minds
that can choose
how to move through it?

The world may tilt toward ruin.
History may repeat its fractures.
Systems may collapse
under their own design.

Still—

We wake up
with the ability
to choose our posture
toward it all.

The good fortune is not safety.
It is agency.

Not permanence.
But participation.

We are not spared endings.
We are spared helplessness.

Even as structures fail,
even as seasons turn without asking,
we can open our hands.

We can live generously
in a temporary body.
We can love boldly
in a temporary world.
We can build meaning
in a landscape
that guarantees erasure.

That is not small.

That is staggering.

The universe could have made us
like stone—
present,
silent,
unchoosing.

Instead, it made us capable
of intention.

Of softness.
Of mercy.
Of light in the dark
that is not required,
but offered.

Everything ends.

That is the design.

But while we are here—
while breath continues—
we are entrusted
with how we exist inside it.

Not trapped in fate.
Not swallowed by inevitability.

Given, inexplicably,
the freedom
to respond.

In a world shaped by endings,
the ability to choose
how we live
is not defiance alone.

It is grace.

And to live openly—
to love without guarantee,
to act kindly without certainty,
to remain soft in a hardening world—

is to honour
the improbable miracle
of having been alive at all.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
