The Choice

The world will fracture.

It always has.

Empires fall.
Cities burn.
Storms arrive without apology
and leave without explanation.

There will be moments
when everything you believed was solid
splits open—
when the ground shifts
and does not shift back.

This is not new.

Destruction is ancient.
Collapse is cyclical.
Darkness does not wait
for permission.

But neither does choice.

Even in the eye of the storm,
there is a stillness
that belongs to you.

Even in ruin,
there is a decision
no one else can make.

You cannot choose
whether the wind comes.
You cannot choose
which structures fail.
You cannot choose
the fact of loss.

But you can choose
how you stand in it.

You can choose
whether your hands become weapons
or shelter.

You can choose
whether your voice sharpens
or steadies.

You can choose
to love when loving feels foolish.
To forgive when bitterness is easier.
To remain soft
when the world demands iron.

Softness is not weakness.
It is resistance.

Light is not naïveté.
It is intention.

In times of cruelty,
goodness becomes radical.

In times of chaos,
calm becomes rebellion.

The storm does not decide
who you are.

The collapse does not decide
what you become.

Every day—
even in ash,
even in aftermath—
you are handed the same power:

Will you mirror the destruction,
or will you interrupt it?

Will you harden,
or will you hold?

Will you close,
or will you open?

History is full of ruin.
It is also full of those
who chose differently.

Those who built gardens
in bombed-out cities.
Who whispered kindness
in rooms thick with fear.
Who lit candles
not because the dark was gone,
but because it wasn’t.

The world may fall apart.

You still get to decide
how you move through the falling.

That is the quiet miracle.

That is the power no storm
has ever taken.

In the end,
you cannot stop the night.

But you can choose
to be a light in it.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
