I refuse A Small Life

I Refuse A Small Life poem by BRITT WOLFE author

Safety is seductive.

It offers clean edges.
Predictable outcomes.
A narrow path where nothing
unexpected can break.

It promises survival.

But survival is not the same
as living.

There is a version of life
where nothing fractures—
where the heart stays guarded,
where choices are calculated
for minimum loss.

Where you are never embarrassed.
Never undone.
Never stretched past comfort.

It is tidy.

It is contained.

It is smaller than I am willing to be.

This life is singular.

One breath at a time
and then it is over.

I will not spend it
avoiding the edges.

I will not trade
richness for reassurance.

Love is risk.
Creation is risk.
Speaking truth is risk.
Leaving is risk.
Staying is risk.

Everything that matters
carries the possibility
of loss.

But everything that matters
also carries expansion.

To choose safety above all else
is to edit the story
before it has a chance
to astonish you.

It is to shrink the sky
to something manageable.

I want the sky enormous.

I want the heartbreak
if it means I felt deeply.
I want the failure
if it means I attempted something
that frightened me.

I want the trembling before the leap.

I want the leap.

This body will age.
This time will pass.
This chapter will close
whether I risk or not.

So I choose the fuller version.

The one with colour.
With ache.
With wide, inconvenient joy.

Safety may keep me intact.

But risk—

risk makes me alive.

And I would rather be
broken open
by experience

than preserved
by caution.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
