Everything Is Made Precious

Time is ruthless.

It does not pause
for your readiness.

It does not negotiate
with your longing.

It moves.

Forward.

Relentless as tide,
indifferent as gravity.

It will take your childhood
without asking.
It will hollow your parents
into memory.
It will turn your body
into something softer, slower,
more aware of endings.

There is never enough of it.

And yet
it is the one thing
we cannot stop receiving.

It rushes us
toward every goodbye.
It carries us
toward oblivion
with unflinching certainty.

It is, at times,
fucking cruel.

Because it makes you love
what it intends to take.

Because it lets you build
what it will eventually dismantle.

Because it hands you joy
already edged
with expiration.

And still—

Without it,
nothing would matter.

If moments did not end,
they would not glow.

If bodies did not age,
touch would not tremble.

If love did not risk disappearance,
it would not burn so bright
while it is here.

Time is the wound.

Time is the reason
the wound is sacred.

It is the quiet architect
of ache.

It is the reason
your chest tightens
at sunsets,
at laughter you know
will not last forever,
at the way someone’s hand
fits inside yours
for now.

The sadness is not separate
from the beauty.

The sorrow is proof
you are awake.

Bone-deep grief
is the cost of noticing.

Soul-deep longing
is the evidence
that you are alive
inside something fleeting.

Time destroys us.

Yes.

But it also distills us.

It presses meaning
into ordinary hours.
It turns repetition
into memory.
It makes this breath—
this one—
unrepeatable.

Everything is made precious
by it.

Not despite its cruelty,
but because of it.

You ache
because you understand
nothing stays.

You love fiercely
because you know
it will end.

Time is not only loss.

It is the reason
anything
ever mattered.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
