The “Christians” are At It Again

The Christians Are At It Again poem by BRITT WOLFE author

They lift the Bible
like a shield.

They quote mercy
through clenched teeth.

They speak of love
while drawing borders
around who deserves it.

This is not new.

In the 1920s,
men in white robes
marched beneath crosses
and called it revival.

They said they were saving America.
They said they were restoring order.
They said God was on their side.

They always do.

They preach family values
while tearing families apart.
Preach purity
while trafficking in power.
Preach humility
while kneeling only to themselves.

The language is scripture.
The practice is domination.

They say righteousness
but mean control.

They say morality
but mean obedience.

They say protection
but mean exclusion.

The cross becomes branding.
The church becomes backdrop.
The sermon becomes strategy.

And anyone who questions
is labeled heretic,
enemy,
godless.

But faith is not loud.

Faith does not need a podium
or a podium light.

Faith does not require
the machinery of the state
to defend it.

When religion marries power,
it stops being sacred
and starts being useful.

And history is crowded
with the bodies
of those sacrificed
in the name of “values.”

It happened in Indiana
when politicians wrapped hate
in hymns.

It happens now
when cruelty hides
behind prayer breakfasts
and campaign slogans.

The Christians are at it again—

or rather,
those who borrow the name
while abandoning the practice.

Because love is patient.
And kindness is not conditional.
And mercy does not build cages.

If your gospel
requires fear to function,
it is not good news.

If your morality
requires someone beneath you,
it is not moral.

And if your God
always seems to hate
the same people you do—

perhaps it is not God
speaking at all.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
