It’s Never Just Business

They say it
like a boundary.

It’s just business.

As if effort can be compartmentalized.
As if devotion can clock out at five.
As if the hours poured into something
don’t seep into bone.

But there is a certain kind of person
who cannot build halfway.

Who cannot create
without leaving fingerprints
under the varnish.

For them,
a project is not a transaction.

It is an extension.

They lose sleep over details
no one else will notice.
They rewrite the sentence.
They sand the edge.
They revise the proposal
for the twelfth time.

Not because they are paid to care—
but because they do.

Their name may not be stamped on it,
but their spirit is.

And when it fails,
they do not shrug.

It is not numbers on a spreadsheet.
It is a piece of them
returning cracked.

This is especially true
of art.

Especially true
of writing.

You think it is content.
You think it is product.
You think it is something
assembled and delivered.

But writing is excavation.

It is pulling something
out of the dark
and offering it
to strangers.

It is bleeding quietly
onto a page
and hoping someone
recognizes themselves
in the wound.

It is choosing words
that expose you
in ways conversation never could.

There is no “just business”
in that.

There is no safe distance
between creator and creation.

When I publish something,
I am not launching a product.

I am revealing
what I have carried.

Every poem
is a confession
shaped into structure.

Every essay
is an argument
about what matters
to me.

Every story
is a risk.

So no—

It’s never just business.

It is the most personal
endeavour
I have ever undertaken.

And if it looks polished
from the outside,

know that it was forged
in quiet rooms
where no one was watching—

where I was deciding
how much of myself
I was willing
to place
into the world.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
