A Life Lived

There are lives
that unfold exactly as planned.

Straight lines.
Predictable seasons.
Carefully chosen destinations.

And then there are lives
that refuse
to stay inside the lines.

Lives that bend,
break,
and wander into landscapes
no map ever promised.

For a long time
there are people
who try to force the river straight.

They build walls.
Draw blueprints.
Write careful lists
of everything the future
should contain.

This is what happiness will look like.
This is where the road will lead.
This is the life that will make sense.

But life—

life has always been
a quiet rebel.

It slips through the cracks
of human certainty.

It rearranges the horizon.

It replaces carefully chosen doors
with wild open fields.

And somewhere along the way
there comes a moment
when the hands finally loosen.

The plans are folded away.

The heart grows quiet enough
to listen.

And the strange miracle begins.

Because when life is finally allowed
to move as it wishes,

it does not give less.

It gives more.

More love
than careful plans
ever thought to include.

More beauty
than logic believed possible.

More unexpected joy
than any tidy vision
of the future could have held.

Whole worlds appear
in the spaces
where certainty once lived.

People arrive
who feel like answers
to questions never spoken aloud.

Paths unfold
that lead somewhere
better
than the destination
once imagined.

And one day
there is a pause.

A moment of stillness
in the middle of an ordinary afternoon.

And the realization arrives
softly, almost shyly:

life has given more
than was ever asked for.

More than was planned.

More than a careful mind
would have dared
to dream.

Not because life
is cruel.

Not because life
is random.

But because life
is far more generous
than the frightened imagination
of those trying to control it.

So the hands open again.

Not in surrender now—

but in gratitude.

Because sometimes
the most beautiful lives
are not the ones
we design.

They are the ones
that quietly arrive

after we step aside

and let life

be life.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
