Some plants
are not meant
to stay where they began.

They grow in crowded soil,
roots tangled
in the shadow of older growth.

The light is thin there.

The air
heavy with what came before.

Still, they grow
as best they can.

A few leaves.
A thin stem
reaching for whatever brightness
slips through the canopy.

And sometimes
a gardener arrives
with quiet understanding.

They study the plant carefully—
the way it leans toward the light,
the way it survives
despite the conditions.

Then, gently,

they cut.

Not to destroy it.

To save it.

At the petiole
the blade moves cleanly.

A separation.

A moment
that might look like damage
to someone who does not understand
how growth works.

But the cutting
is placed in water.

Clear.
Still.

A new beginning.

Days pass.

The leaf does not wither.

Instead, something remarkable happens.

Tiny white roots
begin to appear
where the wound once was.

Life—
patient and determined—
starting again
in a place
where it was never meant to.

Soon the cutting
becomes a plant of its own.

Stronger than expected.

Healthier
than the soil it left behind
would have ever allowed.

It grows tall.

Its leaves widen.

It reaches for sunlight
without apology.

And when people see it
they marvel at the beauty.

They praise its strength.

They admire its quiet vitality.

Few ever wonder
about the place it came from.

Few understand
that sometimes

the healthiest plants
are the ones
that had to leave their original soil
to survive.

But the plant knows.

And it does not carry bitterness.

Only gratitude
for the moment
someone understood

that growth
sometimes begins

with the courage
to cut

and the quiet miracle

of starting again.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
