There is Only This

The past is not a place.
It is a sensation that learned my name
and calls it when my guard is down.

It has no geography,
no door I can open,
no ground that will hold my weight.
It arrives as pressure,
as heat,
as a reflex older than thought.

The future is not a place either.
It has never happened.
It exists only as rehearsal —
a projection stitched together
from fear and hope
arguing over control.

Both feel convincing.
Both demand attention.
Both insist they are urgent.

Neither is occurring.

This —
this breath — is.

This body, still upright.
This moment, unarmed.
This second asking nothing of me
except to be inhabited.

Healing is not the correction of history.
It is not the mastery of tomorrow.

Healing is the slow education of the nervous system
into the truth of where it actually is.

It is learning that now
has no hands around my throat.
That this minute does not require endurance.
That safety is not a promise to be earned later,
but a fact that can be verified
right here.

The past can scream.
The future can threaten.
But neither can touch me
unless I abandon my body
to meet them.

So I stay.

I return — again and again —
to weight,
to breath,
to the ordinary miracle
of being held by the present
without condition.

This is not forgetting.
This is not forgiveness.
This is not pretending it didn’t matter.

This is choosing the only place
where repair is possible.

The past may be real —
but it is not alive.

The future may arrive —
but it is not here.

And right now,
in this unremarkable, holy second,
I am.

And that is enough
to begin again.

Poetry by Britt Wolfe:

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
