Becoming

Becoming A Poem By Britt Wolfe Author

It begins with a whisper—
a knowing beneath the skin,
soft and startling.

I am stretching in ways I cannot see,
becoming a vessel,
a story yet to be told.

There are dreams folded in my palms now,
tiny and weightless,
and fears that press heavy against my ribs.

Will I be enough?
Will I hold you the right way,
teach you the right things,
love you the way you deserve—
fierce and endless,
a love that roots and rises?

I am learning that becoming mother
means reimagining parts of myself
to discover something greater—
a tenderness I never knew
and a strength I never expected.

It is sleepless hope.
It is aching joy.
It is carrying a piece of the universe
and wondering how I’ll ever let go.

He is standing at the edge of something vast,
feet planted, heart unsteady.

The world feels bigger now—
wider with possibilities
and narrower with responsibility.

Will he teach you to be brave?
Will he show you gentleness?
Will he hold your hand with enough care
and let it go at the right time?

He can picture the first laugh,
the first steps,
the first scraped knee
and his hands fumbling with a bandage,
wishing he could shield you from everything
but knowing he shouldn’t.

Becoming father means learning
how to protect without holding too tight,
how to guide without leading the way,
how to be a shelter—
but not a cage.

It is steady presence.
It is quiet promise.
It is learning that love
can be both tender and strong.

And then—us.

Two souls becoming something new,
not just mother, not just father,
but home.

The quiet spaces between us fill
with whispered plans and imagined futures.
Tiny fingers curled around ours in dreams,
laughter we haven’t heard yet
echoing in the walls we built together.

We are both changing—
learning how to hold each other
while preparing to hold you.

There will be nights we don’t know what we’re doing,
days when exhaustion presses at the seams.
But there will also be moments—
oh, so many moments—
when we catch each other’s eyes
over your sleeping form
and know this is everything.

Becoming parents is becoming us,
again,
differently,
deeper.

It is patience and partnership,
guidance and grace.
It is laughter shared over small victories
and hands joined in quiet determination.

We are ready.
For whoever you are,
for whatever you will be.

You are already loved,
by two hearts that beat stronger together,
by two people who will spend forever
becoming more—
for you.

Britt Wolfe

Britt Wolfe writes emotionally devastating fiction with the precision of a heart surgeon and the recklessness of someone who definitely shouldn’t be trusted with sharp objects. Her stories explore love, loss, and the complicated mess of being human. If you enjoy books that punch you in the feelings and then politely offer you a Band-Aid, you’re in the right place.
